Debt Counselling in Cape Town

Affectionately known as the Mother City, Cape Town is the number one place to live for the majority of South Africans. Home to golden beaches, gorgeous houses, and an incredibly diverse collection of culture and cuisine, debt counselling in Cape Town is the perfect place to create a free financial future.

On the flip side of this golden lifestyle comes a harsh financial reality – Cape Town can be a rather expensive place to live. Whether residing in a lavish area or somewhere more suited to the average paycheck, you’re unlikely to live a debt-free life. With property prices typically higher and income being lower than in Johannesburg, coupled with high costs of daily expenses, it is clear why many Capetonians find themselves in financial turmoil.

What’s Debt Counselling?

Debt review is a legal process wherein a debt counsellor (financial practitioner who rearranges your finances) negotiates for lower interest rates and reduced repayments on your behalf. As soon as you apply for debt review, you’re legally protected from asset seizure and legal action, such as judgments, involuntary sequestration, and administration orders.

Your debt counsellor will consolidate your monthly payments and create a repayment plan, then present it to the Magistrate’s court. When the plan is approved, you’ll make one payment each month to a PDA (payment distribution agency). When you’ve paid everyone back (except your mortgage should you be making timely payments), your debt counsellor will grant you a clearance certificate. You can use this to dispute the debt review flag on your profile. At the end of debt review, you’ll have a clear credit profile and be able to begin rebuilding your credit.

Is Debt Counselling in Cape Town Worth It?

If you struggle to make minimum payments and stay financially afloat, debt review is for you. You’ll be awarded reduced repayments, freeing up room in your budget for what’s important. Moreover, you’ll see lessened interest rates, making your debt cheap in the long run. Alongside this, you’ll have a longer repayment term, making repayments more affordable.

Additionally, you’ll be protected under the National Credit Act, which states that no creditor can take legal action against you under debt review (unless you incur further debt or miss payments). No one can seize assets like your house or car or declare you bankrupt involuntarily.

How debt counselling in Cape Town works

Debt counselling (debt review) is a formal process under the National Credit Act that lets over-indebted Cape Town residents reduce their monthly repayments to an affordable level while staying legally protected. Here is how it works with Debtco Group, a registered debt counsellor (NCRDC 3277) based in Milnerton since 2010.

  1. Free assessment. We review what you earn, owe and spend, and confirm whether debt review is right for you.
  2. One reduced payment. We negotiate lower instalments and interest with your credit providers and combine them into a single monthly payment.
  3. Payment distribution. You pay one amount each month to a registered Payment Distribution Agent, which pays your creditors for you.
  4. Legal protection. Your restructured plan is confirmed through the courts, and while you keep to it your creditors cannot take legal action on the accounts under review.
  5. Clearance certificate. Once your debts (excluding a home loan, which runs its normal term) are settled, you receive a clearance certificate and your credit profile is updated so you can rebuild.

Why choose a Cape Town based debt counsellor

Debtco Group is based at Sable Square in Milnerton and serves clients across the Cape Town metro, from the City Bowl and Atlantic Seaboard to the Northern and Southern Suburbs and the West Coast. Because we have run debt reviews for Cape Town households since 2010, we understand the local cost of living your plan has to work around. Most of the process can be handled by phone and email, so you do not need to travel.

Just as importantly, we are properly registered, and you should always verify this before trusting any debt counsellor:

  • NCR registered: debt counsellor NCRDC 3277, verifiable on the NCR public register at ncr.org.za
  • DCASA member: 0801 (Debt Counsellors Association of South Africa)
  • Operating since 2010, with over 15 years of debt review experience
  • Physical Cape Town office: Office 1, 1st Floor, Block J, Sable Square, Milnerton, 7441

What debt counselling can and cannot do

It can: reduce your total monthly repayment to an affordable amount, consolidate multiple accounts into one payment, stop creditor harassment and legal action on included accounts while you keep to the plan, and give you a structured path back to being debt free.

It cannot: cancel or write off your debt, remove accurate information from your credit record, or guarantee a specific outcome. While you are under debt review you also cannot take on new credit, which is part of how the process helps you recover.

What does it cost?

Debt counselling fees in South Africa are set and capped by the National Credit Regulator, so they are the same regardless of which registered debt counsellor you use. We explain every fee to you upfront during your free assessment. You can read more about what debt counselling costs in Cape Town.

Frequently asked questions

Is debt counselling the same as being blacklisted?
No. Debt review is a rehabilitation process, not a blacklisting. You are flagged as under debt review until you complete the process and receive your clearance certificate, after which the flag is removed.

Can I keep my house and car under debt review?
In most cases, yes. As long as you keep to the agreed plan, the assets included in your review are protected.

Which areas of Cape Town do you serve?
All of them. Our office is in Milnerton, and we assist clients across the entire Cape Town metro and the Western Cape.
