11 Aug Is your Debt Counsellor Registered?
Being overly-indebted is not the end of the line, and does not need to define your financial status for the indefinite future. There is an effective, alternative approach to overcoming your debt problems, through the process of Debt Counselling. Before tackling your over-indebtedness through the Debt Counselling process, you need to ask yourself one important question – is your chosen Debt Counsellor Registered with the National Credit Regulator of South Africa (NCR)?
Make sure that you are making use of a reputable Debt Counselling service that is compliant with the National Credit Act, and is performing its services transparently. To know if your Debt Counsellor is registered, you can request that they provide their NCR number. The National Credit Regulator (NCR) is responsible for ensuring that legal and approved Debt Counselling practices are being offered by industry professionals, for the protection of vulnerable consumers. If for any reason you are questioning the legitimacy of your Debt Counsellor, submit your concerns to the National Credit Regulator directly to be certain. The Debt Counsellors Association of South Africa (DCASA)’s aim is to ensure streamlined Debt Counselling services, aligned with the proper processes and guidelines, and can also assist you if you find that your Debt Counsellor is not approved.
If your Debt Counsellor is not registered or acting in accordance with National Credit Regulator approved processes, you may not benefit from protection from legal action that is offered to consumers while undergoing Debt Counselling, even though you might believe you are safe. Your assets could still be repossessed and you could find that your time and money have been wasted on an inept service that has done nothing to improve your financial situation, reduce your debt or lower your monthly payment instalment amounts towards your existing debt.
Debt Counselling should allow you to regain control of your finances, by consolidating all the debts that you owe into one reasonable monthly repayment that encompasses all that you owe, and is collected and distributed by a Payment Distribution Agency (PDA). At Debtco Group, we have assisted client’s from all walks of life, giving them the opportunity to live more comfortably, while working towards overcoming all their debts owed. Our services are delivered legally, through a trusted and comprehensive Debt Counselling process where all expenses are disclosed and all steps line up with those put forward by the National Credit Regulator.
At Debtco Group, we offer a reliable and result driven Debt Counselling service to struggling consumers. Once you have completed the process and repaid all that you owe, you will be issued with a Debt Clearance Certificate. We are registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) under the NCR Nr: NCRDC3277. To find out if you qualify for Debt Counselling and to initiate the process, simply fill out our online application form and wait to hear back from one of our dedicated and trustworthy financial representatives.

How to check if your debt counsellor is registered with the NCR
In South Africa, only a debt counsellor registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) may lawfully place you under debt review. Checking registration takes two minutes and protects you from scams. Here is how:
- Ask for their NCRDC number. Every registered debt counsellor has one (Debtco Group is NCRDC 3277). A legitimate counsellor will give it to you without hesitation.
- Verify it on the NCR register. Go to the NCR website (ncr.org.za) and check the debt counsellor register for that NCRDC number and name.
- Check for a DCASA membership. Membership of the Debt Counsellors Association of South Africa (Debtco is DCASA 0801) is an added mark of a reputable, accountable provider.
- Confirm a real physical address and landline. Established firms have a verifiable office, ours is at Sable Square, Milnerton, Cape Town.
Why registration matters so much
An unregistered “debt counsellor” cannot lawfully take you through debt review. If you hand money to one, your creditors are not properly notified, you get no court-confirmed protection, and you could lose both your money and precious time while your debt grows. Registration is not a technicality, it is the difference between real legal protection and a scam.
Warning signs of an unregistered or fake operator
- They cannot or will not give you an NCRDC number.
- They promise to “clear” or “cancel” your debt, or to remove accurate listings, no one can do that.
- They demand large upfront cash payments or only accept informal transfers.
- They have no verifiable office, landline, or online footprint.
